A simple concept that was pioneered by Uber in 2009 has since created a worldwide phenomenon for anyone needing transportation. Fast-forward 10 years and the very same company has become the trailblazer for the bike and scooter industry. Jump is a dockless scooter and electric bike sharing system that is used in several cities around the United States, including Atlanta, and Germany. Recently, Jump announced the new, high-tech electric powered bike that has the ability to swap lithium-ion batteries, provide a retractable smartphone mount and comes equipped with rear cable locks.
However, like any form of transportation, there have been red flags along the way. For some it was a problem of what they deemed “clutter” or “litter” along the sidewalks of their city. Then it quickly escalated to people having to share the sidewalk with an inexperienced rider going 25-30mph. Finally, the e-scooters began receiving major backlash when personal injuries, pedestrian accidents and ER visits were increasing.
While there is no way to avoid accidents or control the behavior of drivers, Jump has responded with marketing techniques centered on safety.
Additionally, Jump provides their consumers with tips to keep them safe on the road:
- Brake early & gradually: E-scooters have powerful brakes, therefore by braking hard while riding can be difficult to control and dangerous.
- Watch for road hazards: Potholes, train tracks, trolley cars and puddles are all road hazards. If you find yourself crossing a train or trolley track, slow down and cross at an angle.
- Use hand signals: The use of hand signals while riding is always a good way to keep you, and those around you, safe. Bend your left arm toward the sky to signal a right turn and put it straight out to signal a left turn. Bend it down to signal slowing down.
- Keep the sidewalk clear: Lock the bike parallel to the rack so it isn’t in the way of pedestrians. Be sure a JUMP bike isn’t occupying that space already. Always ride on the street; never on the sidewalk.
