Take a moment and look in your backyard. What do you see? Are you one of the 3 million Americans who own a trampoline?
Do your children play at trampoline parks? Have your children attended a trampoline birthday party?
Injured from Jumping on a Trampoline
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there are more than an estimated 100,000 emergency room visits, each year, due to trampoline injuries. Injuries and deaths on a trampoline occur when one person collides with another, one lands improperly, a dangerous fall results in broken bones and/or someone is paralyzed. The worst result is death – a tragedy that tends to strike individuals under the age of 13.
Injured at a Trampoline Park
In recent news, a toddler from Indiana was playing at an indoor trampoline facility. The mother of the young toddler thought it was a great way for her child to “jump-off” some energy. Instead, the child was rushed to the emergency room and left with a toe-to-waist leg cast. Other children and young teens (who may consider themselves “pros” on trampolines) realize that it only takes one wrong landing to alter the course of their life. Thousands of children have become paralyzed because of spinal cord injuries – an injury that has a long road to recovery.
Here are some facts that may deter you from every allowing your child on a trampoline again:
- CPSC data reveals children ages 2 – 5 account for approximately 25,000 trampoline-related ER visits each year.
- A whopping 42% of those injuries among toddlers and preschoolers were for bone fractures.
- According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the smallest and youngest participants are usually at greater risk for significant injury, specifically children 5 years of age or younger. Approximately half of all of the injuries suffered by this age group resulted in fractures or dislocations.
- Many injuries occur even with reported adult supervision.
- Multiple jumpers increase injury risk, particularly to the smallest participants.
