If you thought Thanksgiving travel was a bit crazy, wait until Christmas and New Year’s. For the first time ever, there is an estimated 100 million people expected to travel this holiday. This number triples the 38 million travelers who ventured out over Thanksgiving.
According to a USA Today article and research done by the American Automobile Association (AAA), the growing labor market and lower gas prices are two (2) reasons why more people are deciding to travel. It is expected that between December 23, 2015 and January 3, 2016, people will travel at least 50 miles from their homes to be with friends and family members. In fact, this is the seventh (7th) consecutive year that the number of travelers has grown. Dating back to 2008 there were only an estimated 85.7 million travelers over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
So……..how are people traveling?
Behind the Wheel 91%
Flying through the Clouds 5.7%
Buses, Cruises & Trains……Oh My! 3.3%
The jump for holiday travel is something to be joyous about as more and more people are able to connect with loved ones. However, we also need to be reminded that with heavier traffic, anxious drivers and unpredictable weather—we all need to pay attention to the road. According to the National Safety Council, there were 350 fatalities during the 2012 Christmas year and these statistics have fluctuated each year since then. This year the council predicts 105 fatalities during the holiday season because Christmas lands in the middle of the week rather than over a weekend.
Although fatality predictions are lower for this coming holiday, we cannot ignore the importance of traveling safely. Remember that the most precious cargo we carry isn’t the hover board, toys or eggnog; it’s our passengers.
