Accidents Caused by Distracted Drivers
Many of us associate distracted driving with texting while driving. This is a fair assessment because often times it is that one single text message that leads to a car accident. However, what many of us don’t realize is that there are different layers of distracted driving. According to DMV.org, there are 3 layers or types of distracted driving – manual, visual and cognitive. By understanding each, we can hopefully be more aware of our behavior and stop the distraction before it gets us in trouble.
Manual Distracted Driving
The first of three distractions is Manual. A manual distraction is when we take one or both hands off of the steering wheel and manually perform a task. Examples of this can be, lighting a cigarette, reaching to help a child, eating or reaching for something. A manual distraction takes us away from holding the steering wheel; something that should never be done.

The second is Visual. Visual distractions are ones that take our eyes off of the road. Examples include reaching for something that has dropped, changing the radio station, adjusting the GPS or doing your makeup. A fundamental driving skill is to always look in the direction that your car is moving – at all times. Even a momentary visual distraction can result in a car accident.
Cognitive Distracted Driving
The third type of distracted driving is Cognitive. When your mind drifts away from the road, you really aren’t “driving”. This is one of the hardest distractions as we tend to have passengers in our car with whom we carry on a conversation or we wonder off in a daydream. These types of situations will cognitively distract us and lessen our ability to react to dangers in the road. Many car accidents can simply be avoided if drivers pay attention.
