We are mere hours away from a day dedicated to family and food (and football)! Many of us awake early and reside in the kitchen the entire day as we want to make a Thanksgiving feast a delight for all to share. Therefore, it is important to mention some safety tips so your dinner preparation goes smoothly.
On average, there are 430 daily fires and cooking is the number one reason. U.S. fire departments also respond to an average of 156,600 fires each year involving cooking equipment. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving alone is the leading day for fires involving cooking equipment—with three times the average number. In fact, the holidays have more residential deaths, injuries and property damage due to fire than any other time during the year.

However, these fires can be prevented by communicating to all individuals—in and out of the kitchen. Take a peek at some helpful tips so you don’t endure an unwanted house fire this holiday season:
- Always stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.
- Never leave your home when cooking the turkey and check on it frequently.
- At all times, keep children away from the stovetop and suggest keeping them away from the kitchen all together.
- Hot liquids and food are also a risk—keep children away from potential splashing of hot liquids or steam.
- Make sure you have a cleared area for cleaning so no one trips and falls.
- Keep knives out of reach from children.
- Be aware of cords from an electric knife, mixer, etc. as children can easily reach dangling objects from the counter.
- Try to not leave candles burning unattended.
- Before you begin cooking, check all smoke alarms and ensure they are working properly.
- It isn’t a bad idea to have a properly working fire extinguisher in the event a fire arises.
- In the event a fire starts in your oven, turn off the heat and keep the door closed—DO NOT FIGHT THE FIRE YOURSELF.
So, as you are preparing for your feast, please double check your kitchen, alarms and equipment. By keeping these tips in mind, your Thanksgiving dinner is sure to be safe and delicious! At Kaine Law we have seen too many individuals fall victim to dangerous and unwanted house fires—please be safe and enjoy quality time with family, loud roars from the television and pleasant aromas from the kitchen!
